World Health Organization condemns attacks on health facilities and health workers in Sabha, Libya

Attacks on health facilities and medical staff negatively affect health care delivery and deprive civilians in need from receiving health services

TUNIS, Tunisia, November 20, 2017,-/African Media Agency (AMA)/- WHO has received reports from the Sabha medical center on recent kidnapping of one of its doctors.

WHO strongly condemns kidnapping of health workers as well as any other attacks on medical personnel and health facilities. We consider immoral and illegal any act of verbal or physical violence, obstruction or threat of violence that interferes with the availability, access and delivery of health care.

Attacks on health facilities and medical staff negatively affect health care delivery and deprive civilians in need from receiving health services.

WHO urges all to refrain from attacking health workers and facilities, as required by international humanitarian law, and calls upon parties responsible for the kidnapping of the doctor in Sabha to ensure his safety and immediate release.
