The decision of the Cross River State government to carry out remedial works on federal highways in the state has been commended by some motorists, especially those plying the Calabar-Odukpani highway. ‎
They also praised Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River for the remedial works and appealed to the Federal Government to ensure that some failed portions of the roads are quickly put in order.
One of the motorists, Mr Declan Ibe, commended the Governor for the initiative, but lamented that the condition of the road is very bad and hopes something will be done soon by the federal government.
He expressed happiness at the ongoing efforts by Governor Ayade to temporarily fix the road.
Also speaking, Mr Promise Alozie, a tanker driver, thanked the governor for the ongoing efforts and called on the federal government to respond urgently by rehabilitating  the road.
Another motorist, who is also a lecturer with the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH), Dr James Ibe expressed satisfaction with the state’s urgent intervention on the road, noting that it is  a very positive development which shows that the Governor Ayade- led government in the state is alive to its responsibilities.
Giving insight on the efforts by the state government, the site engineer and Director in the Ministry of Works, Engineer Godwin Akeke, said the ongoing work is an initiative of the Cross River State Governor Ayade aimed at bringing succour to those who ply the roads.
“It would interest you to know that this is the only road leading to Calabar. There have been cases where people spent 8 to 10 hours and in some cases people have had to sleep on the road as a result of its bad state. This is a road that ordinarily should not take more than 30 minutes.  Bothered by what Cross Riverians are made to go through on the road, Governor Ayade decided he cannot continue to see  people suffer so he decided to intervene to put an end to the sufferings.
“These are palliative measures to put the road in a reasonable state. This intervention will go further to cover the Calabar- Itu road. The directive from the Governor is that we must keep the road motorable but insisted that the measures that have been taken on the road as intervention must stand the test of time.”
Akeke appealed to Cross Riverians to appreciate governor Ayade for the intervention and urged the federal government to urgently carry out rehabilitation of the road
