The National Full Council meeting of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) was held at the Ernest Ikoli (NUJ) Press Centre, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on August 27, 2015.

After deliberations, the Full Council resolved as follows:

1. Full Council thanked the Rivers State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike, and the Rivers State Government for the magnanimity in hosting the meeting

2. Full Council commended the Governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike, and the Rivers State Government for the commitment and support demonstrated within such a short period towards national sports development and the welfare of Rivers athletes and players

3. Full Council raised concern over the non payment of salaries and entitlements due sports men and women engaged by various governmental and corporate organizations as well as individual sports club owners and called on their employers to pay up these arrears to reduce the hardship on Nigerian sports men and women

4. Full Council noted the tendency for conflict between the office of the Minister of Sports/ Chairman, National Sports Commission, and the office of the Director General of the  National Sports Commission,  and called on the government to come clear on what structure it wants to use in administering sports between the ministry system and the Commission system with a view to eliminating conflicts and ensuring order in the administration of sports. It also urged President Mohammadu Buhari to ensure that persons who may be appointed to administer Nigerian sports are distinguished with the passion, professionalism, experience and competence in sports management

5. Full Council equally called on the National Assembly to expedite action in the consideration and passage of various bills on sports as this will help in solving some of the problems militating against the administration and  development of sports in the country.

6. Full Council wished all athletes to the Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games a successful outing at the continental event and called on Nigerians to pray for them. It also called on Nigerian athletes and administrators to begin now to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games.

7.  Full Council called on the Cross River State Government and the National Sports Commission to re-engage themselves with a view to restoring the programme of the National Sports Festival and by extension the national sports calendar which appears to have come to jeopardy after the last festival in Lagos

8. Full Council commended the Nigeria Football Federation and the League Management Company for the improvements they have brought to bear on Nigerian domestic football, especially the premier league,  and urged our sports administrators not to relent in their efforts while also calling on its member sports journalists to do more towards the publicity and promotion of our national leagues and domestic sports as an imperative for nation building and generation of employment, enterprise and investment through the sports sector.

9.  Full Council commended the chairman and members of the Rivers State Chapter of  SWAN for their resourcefulness and hospitality

10. Full Council called on the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory chapters of SWAN to initiate programmes that would further move the association forward.
