A Communique of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council issued atthe end of monthly state congress on 9th, September, 2015.
Press Releases September 14, 2015 admin
1. Congress decries the deplorable condition of Federal roads in Cross River State and urges the Federal Government to urgently address the situation.
The Government’s attention was been drawn especially to the collapsed portions of the Calabar/Ikom/ Ogoja highway as well as the federal highway axis of Atimbo/Akpabuyo road, which has become a death trap to commuters and made commuting challenging.
Congress noted that without prompt repair of the collapsed portion, Calabar the state capital would be isolated from the rest of the country.
2. Congress also urged the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, to check the excesses of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHEDC in Cross River State.
While urging the PHEDC to be alive to its official duties, congress reminds the management of the company that the responsibility to install transformers, poles and other electrical facilities within the State remains her statutory obligation and not that of the public they serve. Congress condemned in strong terms the situation where the PHEDC forces residents to procure transformers, armoured cables and other electrical materials and at the same time made to pay huge and unrealistic bills for services not provided.
However, it appreciates the increase in power supply from the national grid.
3.The passage of the anti-kidnapping law has been described as commendable. Congress further applauds Governor Ben Ayade for timely assent to nine other bills such as the law on housing for low income earner and tax exemption law, which will have direct, positive impact on the citizenry.
4. Also, the congress commended the Cross River State Government for lifting the embargo on employment into the State’s public/civil service, noting that there was need to employ young, vibrant and innovative Cross Riverians to learn and gradually take over affairs of Ministries, Departments and Agencies as older workers retire.
5. In order to prevent the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along the roads and drainage, congress enjoins the State Government to rescind its decision to withdraw dumpsters previously located at strategic corners within the metropolis pending the full implementation of the new policy on waste evacuation.
