Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu has arrived Calabar for his maiden official visit as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL).

According to a statement by UNICAL’s Information Officer, Mr Effiong Eyo, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Epoke, led other Principal Officers, management and newly elected members of the University’s Governing Council to welcome Iwuanyawu.

“Shortly on arrival at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, the welcoming party proceeded to the Institution’s Guest house where the Vice Chancellor introduced top officials and members of the Council to the Pro-Chancellor.

In a remark, Iwuanyawu expressed his appreciation to the Vice Chancellor and his team for their show of hospitality. Chief Iwuanyawu said it was an honour to be Chairman of Unical’s Governing Council. He also stated that as an alumnus of the university it provided for him a better opportunity to render service to his Alma mater.

The Pro-chancellor pledged to ensure that the University moves to the next stage in its development, adding that his desire is to make Unical the first among equals in the country. He commended the University’s management for efforts so far in giving the varsity a positive status and also for being in tune with the peaceful nature of the host state.

In a related development, Iwuanyawu, in addition to holding an Inaugural Council meeting, also paid a courtesy visit on the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Otu Abasi V in His Palace.

The Pro-Chancellor said he came with his Council members  and Principal Officers of the University to sue for the continuous co-operation of the Traditional Fathers in the task of moving the Institution to the next level.

He also noted that as the host Community they have a vital role to play in the development of the Institution.

Responding, the Obong of Calabar, represented by the Chairman, Etubom’s Council, Etubom Okoh Bassey Duke, congratulated the Pro-chancellor and members of the Governing Council on their new status.

He stated that the Palace received the news of their appointment with joy.and also commended the Epoke-led Administration for forging a cordial relationship with their host Community.

He restated the commitment of the Palace to sustain that relationship.
