HID Awolowo
The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has formerly announced the death of Chairperson, Chief (Mrs) H.I.D Awolowo. This is just as the Ebonyi State Government commiserated with the family of the departed wife of Nigerian statesman, Chief Obafemi Awoowo.
A release signed by the Executive Director of the foundation, Dr O. Awolowo Dosumu and made available to Africanewscircle.com read:
“The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation reports with sadness the passing of its Chairperson and moving spirit, Yeye Oodua HID Awolowo. She died on Saturday 19th of September at the ripe age of 99.
The Foundation hereby informs the general public that an HID Awolowo Foundation will be inaugurated shortly, to celebrate and commemorate in perpetuity the outstanding contributions of Mama, HID to family values, entrepreneurship and perseverance in the face of adversity. Although the details and fine points of this initiative are being worked out, it takes no great insight to appreciate the synergy between the values that Mama stood for and exemplified and the legacy of the sage, from which the Foundation has derived its core mandate and competencies.”
“It is pertinent to recall Mama’s fortitude and exemplary forte in keeping the faith both at a time when her husband was unjustly persecuted by political authorities and in the years since the sage passed on. It ought to be remarked that her business acumen, organizational intelligence and hard work stood her in good stead throughout her remarkable life. It is in recognition of these virtues and the need to underline the careers of role models and visionaries in a morally adrift generation that the HID Awolowo Foundation is being instituted under the aegis of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation.”
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Government have commiserated with the Awolowo family on the death of their matriarch, Chief HID Awolowo, on Saturday,Sept.19.
In a release issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Ebonyi State governor, Mr Emma Anya, the state government regretted that the late Mrs Awolowo passed when she was very close to her 100th birthday.
“It is demoralising because it took place only 61 days to November 25,when the world would have joined her family to celebrate her 100th birthday”, the message stated.
“We must however give glory to God because HE gave her the ability to live a worthy life. It is a known fact that Mama,even in her old age,was a rallying point not only in South-West politics but across the nation. Her husband and the late sage,Chief Obafemi Awolowo, once described Mama HID as his “Jewel of inestimable value” but I state here that Nigeria has lost that same jewel that Chief Awolowo left for us. To my brother,Governor Ibikunle Amosun, and the good people of Ogun State,please accept my condolences”, the statement added.
