The detained Director of Radio Biafra and leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Prince Nnamdi Kanu, today appeared before the Abuja Chief Magistrate Court to answer criminal charges preferred against him by the Nigerian Government.

The court had ordered the Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) to bring Mr. Kanu before it today.

The DSS had refused to produce Kanu earlier in spite of the court’s order as the prosecution counsel, Mr Moses Idakwo, told the court that the IPOD leader was not brought to court because of an application challenging its jurisdiction to continue the trial, which was already scheduled for hearing.

Chief Magistrate Shuaibu Usman had, following the absence of the accused person, ordered the DSS to ensure that he is brought to court today, November 23.

Prince Kanu is standing trial for alleged criminal conspiracy, managing and belonging to an unlawful society and criminal intimidation contrary to sections 97 and 397 of Nigeria’s penal code.

Kanu was arrested on October 18 by operatives of the DSS on his arrival from the United Kingdom. He was granted bail when arraigned before Chief Magistrate Usman but continued to be detained by the DSS despite meeting the very stringent bail conditions given.
