Tension has enveloped Nigeria’s Kogi State following the sudden death on Sunday, of the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the election concluded on Saturday, Prince Abubakar Audu. Audu, a former governor of the state, was at the verge of the winning the election to return for the third time as governor. The death however elicited mixed feelings in Lagos where the late Audu’s running mate, Abiodun Faleke worked, and which is home to his protege and former governor, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Prince Audu challenged the incumbent Governor, Idris Wada in last Saturday’s gubernatorial election in the state and was leading in the early results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). INEC had announced that the late Audu scored 240,867 votes as against the 199,514 votes polled by Governor Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

News of the late politician’s death, reportedly of a heart attack, circulated shortly after INEC declared the election inconclusive on the grounds that the total of the invalid votes were more than Audu’s margin of victory.

Meanwhile, Governor Wada has declared seven days of mourning for the former governor who has been buried in his home town, Ogbonicha in Ofu Local Government Area of the state in accordance with Islamic injunctions.
