NIMASA shuts jetties in Port Harcourt, Calabar over non-compliance with ISPS Code

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has shut two different jetties in Port Harcourt and Calabar for failure to comply with the International Ship and Port Facility Security(ISPS) Code.
This is contained in a statement on Friday in Lagos by the Head of Public Relations of NIMASA, Hajia Lami Tumaka, and made available to newsmen.
The statement named the affected jetties as the Magcobar Manufacturing Limited jetty at Reclamation Road Port Harcourt and Shoreline Logistics Limited at Old NPA Port, Marina Road Calabar.
It said NIMASA carried out the exercise pursuant to its powers as the Designated Authority (DA) for implementation of the ISPS Code.
According to the statement, both facilities reportedly failed to comply with the provisions of the code after repeated warnings in that regard.
NIMASA, in a bid to ensure 100 per cent compliance with the provisions of the code, had instituted stringent measures against defaulting facilities, the statement read.
It said the action became necessary considering NIMASA’s efforts to attain its present position of over 80 per cent compliance with the nation’s 129 facilities.
The statement indicated that the shut facilities would remain closed until their managers corrected the identified deficiencies and paid a prescribed fine.
Recall that NIMASA, in a similar exercise last week, had shut the Obat Oil and Petroleum Limited Jetty at Ibafon over non-compliance with the ISPS code.
The statement said NIMASA would continue the exercise, to ensure achievement of 100 per cent compliance to guarantee the security of ships and port facilities especially in a period when terrorists’ activities had heightened.
