2015 Akwa Ibom Governorship: Forum harps on Zoning

Ahead 2012 General Elections, Akwa Ibom Coalition Forum (ACF) has reiterated its support for the existing zoning arrangement for governorship positions amongst the three senatorial zones in the state.

ACF is a political pressure group within the Peoples Democratic Party advocating for power shift to Akwa Ibom South political zone in Akwa Ibom.

Coordinator of the Forum Mr. Mbong Mbong said that zoning has been entrenched in the political system in the state prior to return of democracy in 1999.

Mbom said that the group was currently working cross the state to enlist the support of other zones in the state to actualize the governorship ambition of the zone.

He noted that Eket zone had supported Uyo and Ikot Ekpene zones to produce governors for the state and urged them to reciprocate the gesture.

Political activities have been building up recently towards the 2015 governorship election in Akwa Ibom.

He said that the group was promoting the candidature of Chief Assam Assam (SAN), Nigerian Ambassador to the Russian Federation.

Assam he said was eminently qualified and a tested politician with the experience to drive development of Akwa Ibom from 2015.

Assam was Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Akwa Ibom before he was appointed Nigerian Envoy to Russia

Mbom assured that the Diplomat had developed a blueprint to consolidate on the achievements of Chief Godswill Akpabio.

He said that the clamour for the governorship of Akwa Ibom by politicians from other political zones outside Akwa Ibom south was unjustified, “It is totally strange that some people have started positioning candidates for governorship in 2015, perhaps they do not know. We are hereby informing them that Uyo Senatorial District had their shot between 1999 and 2007, Ikot Ekpene is currently having its turn from 2007 till 2015 and it is Eket that will take up its shot from 2015. It is not only fair to allow Eket zone but it is the reasonable thing to do for political equity and balance,” Mbom said.
