Present and past political office holders from Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State, have thrown their weight behind the aspiration of the people of the area to produce the next governor of the state in 2015 at the expiration of the 8 year tenure of the incumbent governor, Dr. Godswill Akpabio. This was the outcome of an inter…active/consultative meeting held over the weekend between the people of the Senatorial district and serving and former political office holders at the instance of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District Assembly. The well attended meeting which drew participants from the I2 local government areas of the senatorial district to the Eket Civic Centre, agreed among others, to step up the tempo in galvanizing the  support of all stakeholders in the Akwa Ibom project from the other two senatorial districts. Among those who attended the meeting include the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Pastor Ita Umo Udo, the member for Eket State Constituency Mr Ayang A Ayang while the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Barr Martin Udoinyang was represented by a director in his Ministry. All those who spoke at the event agreed that the district deserved to be encouraged to produce Governor Akpabio’s successor in 2015. A former member of the House of Assembly, Barr. Jack Udota, Executive Chairman, Eket Local government area, Mr. Aniekan Akpan, Former commissioner for Information, Mr. Chris Abasi Eyo, former Special Adviser, Chief Antigha Eyo Bassey were among those that spoke strongly on the issue.
Others included a  former commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, Engr. Iroigak Ikann, a former AKISIEC Commissioner Dr. Ini Adiakpan, a former parliamentarian, Obong Maurice Ukpong, and a former Finance Commissioner, Obong Etukafia among others. The President General of Oro Union, Barr O. D. Okon advised the people to remain resolute in their advocacy and expressed the hope that the district’s prayers will be answered. Earlier in his address, the Chairman, Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District Assembly, Chief Nduese Essien, explained that the meeting was necessitated by the need to create an interaction between past and present political office holders,  elected or appointed with a view to reaching a consensus on issues affecting the senatorial district.
Essien, the immediate past Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development maintained that the road to the Hiltop mansion come 2015 could only become a reality if all stakeholders in the area unite as a team in pursuing the cause. He commended the immediate past Chairman of PDP in the state, Prince Uwem Ita Etuk, former Deputy Governors, Dr. Chris Ekpenyong and Ambassador Etim Okpoyo and several others for speaking up and saying the truth and defending same. Chief Essien called on Governor Akpabio who is the Chairman, PDP Governors’ Forum in Nigeria and also as a leader of the party in the state,” to clear the air on the issues of Zoning, rotation, equity, Justice, and fair play”.
