Tournament hosts, South Africa started their campaign at the on-going 29th edition of the African Cup of Nations on a drab note after playing out a barren draw with Group A rivals, Cape Verde.
The South Africans worked hard to overcome their tag as a side which struggles to score goals, failing to create good chances in front of a throng of expectant fans at the Johannesburg city stadium.
Cape Verde also produced the best opportunity of the game, with striker Platini firing his close-range shot wide.
The end result, however, gave the small island nation its first nation’s cup point.
