The new Management Board of Pelican Stars Football Club of Calabar has expressed its determination to return the team to its glorious days in Female football in Nigeria.

Eddy Bekom, member of the board and team’s Media Officer, expressed the optimism in an interview with journalists in Calabar.

Bekom, who is also the State Chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) said the team was being repositioned to make it a force to reckon with in female league in the country.

“Our primary objective is to return Pelican star to its original place in the comity of female football in the country. I remember when Pelican Stars used to produce the bulk of players to the Super Falcons, but for quite some time it has gone underground. We must reverse the trend,” he said.

He further disclosed that, the players, tutored by former Falconets Coach Edat Egan, with former Super Falcon’s midfielder, Effioanwan Ekpo as Team Manager, are reporting to camp preparatory for the 2016/17 league season.

“As at today we have 15 players in camp and the remaining 15 players are expected to report before Sunday. By Monday the team will resume training ahead of the commencement of the new season,” he said.

He blamed the abysmal performance of the team in the last female football league on poor funding.
He also appealed to the State Government, through the Ministry of Sports, to fund the club in order to reclaim its lost glory.

“We cannot but appeal to the authorities to be proactive in the release of funds to the club, in the course of the 2016/17 season, so that we can honor our matches, especially away matches.

“This is very important, if we are to succeed,” Bekom said.
He also solicited the support of the media in projecting the team, adding that, Pelican star is a good brand.

The SWAN chairman described the appointment of a sports writer as media officer and a board member as a new innovation in the state.

“Our Colleagues should see this as good gesture and key into the vision of the management for the success of the team and the state in general,” he said.
