The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has organised a one day South-South zonal consultative meeting in Calabar on the need to open up electoral space for citizens including People Living With Disabilities (PWDs).

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Cross River, Mrs Gesila Khan, said on Thursday that the meeting considered the draft policy for the development of a PWD Access Policy for the Commission.

Represented by Mr Henry Ayomanor, the Administrative Secretary in the Commission, Khan said that the meeting was timely following the developing plans and process for the electoral cycle that would culminate in the 2019 general elections.

Khan said the meeting was a significant step in the process that would lead to the development of PWD Access Policy and the commission’s desire to open up electoral spaces for all citizens.

She said that the opening of the electoral space would guide citizens to benefit from the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended).

“This meeting is an apt reflection of the commission’s desire to further open up the electoral space for all citizens, particularly for the purpose of benefiting from the rights guaranteed by the constitution.

“As citizens of this great country, it is indeed the view of the commission, that every eligible PWD has the right to vote and be voted.

“It is therefore not surprising that the commission had decided to go beyond adhoc arrangement to a sustainable policy that would seek to guarantee the rights of the PWDs in the country,” she said.
