Papa Wemba
One of Africa’s music icons and world renowned Congolese superstar musician, Papa Wemba is dead. Aged 66, Papa Wemba whose real name is Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba collapsed on stage during a live performance early Sunday morning in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Reports say the Soukous exponent slumped during the concert while his dancers continued to perform, apparently not aware of the sudden death.
He was confirmed dead by first responders before he could be transported to the hospital, according to reports. The cause of death was unknown as at the time of filing this report.
Wemba was was one of Africa’s most popular musicians. He was in the league of those who defined melodious contemporary dance hall beats and belongs in the pantheon where the likes of Prince and Michael Jackson are classified.
