Trailing from behind in a 2014 World Cup qualifying play-off in Addis Ababa, Nigeria’s Super Eagles rattled Ethiopia to a 2-1 defeat making the return leg in a fortnight a mere formality.

Ethiopia’s Asafa put his side in the lead with the first goal that came early in the first half but the African champions bounced back not long after to equalize through Emmanuel Emenike whose goal kept the erstwhile roaring Ethiopian fans on edge.

In the 89th minute of play, a deft Emenike who picked a quick pass at the edge of the Ethiopian penalty box beat an on-rushing opponent who in desperation, brought down the goal-bound striker.  The resultant penalty taken by Emenike himself, sealed the fate of the Ethiopians and gave the Nigerians not just the three points at stake but almost assured them of a fifth world appearance.

The return leg comes up on November 16 in Calabar, South Eastern Nigeria.
