Acting Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr. (Mrs.) Christy Atako has called on Nigerians to imbibe the habit of free blood donation to save life.

Dr. Atako made the call after donating blood at the Armed Forces Blood Center, Port Harcourt where she also presented 5,000 units of mosquito treated nets on behalf of the Commission.

“Blood transfusion is very essential and important in the life of the people of this region that is why we have come to donate the mosquito treated nets to motivate and encourage the blood donors”

According to her “the NDDC is not only interested in infrastructural development, but also in human capacity development and providing community services including improving health care for the people”.

On her feelings after the blood donation, the NDDC Boss said “I feel very fulfilled knowing that God has given me the capacity to donate and safe life. It is one thing everybody should do”.

Receiving the items, the Co-ordinator of the Armed Forces Blood Centre, Col Juo Bassey thanked the NDDC for the donation assuring that the mosquito nets would be distributed judiciously.

Also speaking the Commandant of the Military Hospital Port Harcourt Brigadier General R.N Nkado thanked NDDC for the support to the hospital, with the newly renovated modern mortuary and the donation of a 500KVA generating set to the Hospital.

Meanwhile, the NDDC has threatened to determine the Abam-Abibo-Oba-Link Road, project in Rivers State over non-performance.

Just as the Commission has stepped  up work on the Okrika-Borikiri road/Bridges, also in Rivers State.

The 6km asphaltic concrete Igbiri-Abam-Abibo-Oba link road has four bridges, and 2.5km concrete drains with cross section of 600x600mm while the 3.65km Okrika –Borikiri road has 3 bridges connecting Kolabi, Abotoru and Okpoka creeks to Port Harcourt.

Speaking to Newsmen shortly after inspecting the projects, the Acting Managing Director, NDDC, and Dr (Mrs.) Christy Atako expressed displeasure at the extent of work done on the Igbiri-Oba Link road which was awarded since 2009. According to her, “That project was awarded in 2009, it is made up of 4 bridges, and I didn’t see any work going on, there is nothing significant to justify the money paid to the contractor”.

Dr. Atako who summoned the contractor to the office, threatened that the Commission would not hesitate to determine the project if his explanation for abandoning site is not satisfactory. “No contractor will be allowed to take us for granted any more, the Commission will strive to get value for all money paid”.

She however commended the contractor handling the Okrika-Borikiri link road the satisfactory for progress of work on that road.

According to the NDDC Boss the road when completed will reduce traffic congestion on the refinery road as well as reduce travel time from Okrika to Port Harcourt.
