ObianoObianoThe All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Chief Willie Obiano, has been declared Anambra State Governor-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The formal announcement was made in the early hours of Sunday by the state returning officer in the governorship election concluded on Saturday, Prof. James Epoke, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar.

Declaring the final result in Awka, the state capital, Epoke said that Obiano won a total of 180,178 votes while Comrade Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who placed second, scored 97,700 votes, while Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came third with 95,953 votes.

“Chief Willie N. Obiano of APGA having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and returned as governor,” Epoke said.

It would be recalled that Obiano had led the first round of voting on November 16 and 17 with 174,710 votes and secured 25% in 18 of the 21 local government areas of the state but was not declared winner because the margin of victory over second-placed Comrade Tony Nwoye of the PDP was less that the canceled votes.

Saturday’s Anambra State supplementary governorship poll in a way disproved assumptions. One of such was the notion that Idemili North belonged to the APC flag bearer, Senator Chris Ngige, but he lost narrowly with five votes to Chief Willie Obiano of the ruling APGA, the state Governor-elect.

Ngige, who had been trumpeted as the man to beat for the high job, was beaten to the third position by Comrade Tony Nwoye of the PDP.
