Sen. Helen Esuene, Senator Representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District Saturday empowered about 1000 youths and women in Akwa Ibom to be self-reliant. Esuene disclosed this on the occasion of her 2013 Constituency Briefing/Empowerment programme in Eket Local Government Area.

According to her, the empowerment of youths and women is a collective responsibility and that is the reason I am stepping out of my official mandate of law making to carry out this exercise.

“Today, I am doing a public presentation to conform with the political expectation of our times. Some lives have been touched in the past and some others will be touched in the future. This empowerment exercise is therefore not final. Other deserving persons will be appreciated and empowered before I vacate the Senate seat,’’ she said.

The beneficiaries were empowered with generator sets, gas cooker, freezers, sewing machine, hair dryers, flat screen television sets, rechargeable standing fan, musical equipment, among others. She also presented a cash donation of N100, 000 each to some of the beneficiaries.

Cars were also presented to PDP Chapter Chairmen and Chapter Coordinators of Sen. Esuene senatorial campaign team across the 12 local Government Area in the senatorial district.

The senator urged the beneficiaries to use the empowerment tools to improve their on-going businesses, set up barbing business, viewing centres, catering businesses, dress making and hair dressing and transport. She prayed that the beneficiaries would not disposed the items but rather put them into good use. The Senator said the task of creating useful employment for the youths should be sustained by all relevant stakeholders in the state.

In her remark, Mrs Valerie Ebe, the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom, expressed appreciation to Sen. Esuene for empowering youths in the state, saying that youth’s empowerment was Gov. Akpabio’s administrative agenda.

“I feel very happy that the Senator we send to represent us has done it and she has not done it for herself but consider people of her senatorial district. She has done excellently well,” she said.

Ebe said that women should be given more opportunities to mount political positions in the country.

Also speaking, Sen. Emmanuel Essien, Chairman of the occasion, urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items given to them. He called on those who are aspiring for political positions to emulate Sen. Esuene and advised them to use their positions to better the life of the people.

One of the beneficiaries of the car, Mr Godwin David, Eket PDP Chapter Chairman expressed appreciation to Sen. Esuene and promised to use the car for the purpose it was meant for.
