Mrs Obioma Liyel-Imoke, the First Lady of Cross River has called for more enrolment of students in Science and Technology subjects at the basic and senior secondary school levels of education.

The governor’s wife stated this Friday at the 3rd Innovation JETS Science Teachers/Students’ Conference and award at the International Conference Centre, University of Calabar.
She said that the ceremony organised by the State’s Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (JETS) was commendable for ensuring that more students in public and private schools embrace science and technology.
Mrs Imoke also commended the State’s JETS team for making Cross River and Nigeria proud after winning the Nigerian competition and coming fourth globally at a Science Fair held in Taiwan this year.
The first lady who also received the innovation prestigious award at the ceremony in appreciation of her entrepreneurial excellence also said that she would do more to continually justify the award.
“ I feel extremely excited to be in the midst of creative geniuses and future icons of science and technology.
“I can see in this hall the bill gates, Isaac Newtons, the Galileos, the Aristotles, the Archimedes and the like of many other notable scientists of this generation. That is no mean feat, by all standards.
She also expressed what she called her passion about qualitative and practical education, adding that her passion was driven her belief in functional and rounded education.
“That is part of what propelled me to set up the Surefoot International school. We want to contribute to setting excellent standards in learning and providing a conducive environment for all young people to discover the purpose of life.
“We all need to join hands to give Nigerian children the best of opportunities because the future of Nigeria belongs to them.’’ she said.
Mrs Imoke was represented at the occasion by Mrs Tammie Kammonke, the Executive Director, Partnership Opportunities for Women Empowerment Realization (POWER), a Non Governmental Organisation she founded,
In her speech, the state’s JETS Coordinator, Mrs Margaret Ene-Ita, said JETS club is domiciled in public and private senior secondary, junior secondary and primary schools in Cross River.
She said that JETS had been a “national club’’ that encourages students to study mathematics, science and technology subjects at the levels of those education aforementioned.
“Apart from the academic and practical exercises JETS students are also taught skills that will help develop their God-given potentials,’’ she said.
