In what appears to be a shake-up in the military high command, the Defense Headquarters has effected a leadership change at the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta saddled with the task of combating oil theft. The new Joint Task Force JTF Commander, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Atewe at the weekend pledged to intensify efforts in the fight against oil theft in the region.

Atewe who made the pledge at a handover ceremony at the headquarters of JTF in Yenagoa, Bayelsa, gave the assurance that he would uphold that mandate of the task force.

Until his appointment, Atewe was the Commander, Brigade of Guards at the Presidency.

He takes over as JTF commander from Maj.-Gen Iliyasu Abbah who has been redeployed to the Defense Headquarters, Abuja as Military Secretary in charge of the Nigerian Army.

Abbah assumed duty as JTF commander on Jan. 10, 2014.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Abbah said: “I am just settling down to work after studying the situation on the ground and devising a strategy to deploy to the challenge of combating oil theft and securing oil facilities.

“But due to service exigencies, I have been called to serve elsewhere and I will leave the plans for my predecessor to execute.”

The outgoing commander applauded the troops for their dedication to duty and urged them to extend the support he enjoyed to the new commander.
