Police Raid On clark’s residence: Ohaneze Youths Urge IGP To Go Beyond Apology To Build Public Confidence

Ohanaeze Youth Wing (OYW) has urged the Inspector-General of Police, (IGP) Mr Ibrahim Idris to go beyond the apology over the illegal raid on the residence of elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark..

Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, Coordinator of OYW who made the call in an interview session on Saturday in Yenagoa noted that the apology to Clark was a welcome development.

The Police raided Clark’s house following a false information given by an unidentified taxi cab driver, who claimed the Ijaw national leader was gun-running.

Idris has since denied authorising the raid by some police inspectors now dismissed for carrying out an illegal order.

The youth leader who applauded the IGP for the exemplary display of courage in apologising for the raid urged him to fish out Senior Officers who authourised the raid as the dismissed officers acted on ‘orders from above’.

“We welcome and applaud the apology tendered by the IGP to Chief Edwin Clark, but he needs to take further decisive actions win back public confidence in the Police.

“This illegal raid is one too many and the IGP should use it to send the right signals because so many Nigerians are at the mercy of Policemen on illegal duties.

“The perpetrators of the unauthorised raid met their waterloo because the victim was a prominent Nigerian; other less prominent Nigerians suffer daily in the hands of Policemen on such illegal duties.

“Sacrificing the few policemen by their reported dismissal  is nt enough because they could not have acted alone all one their own, the investigation should be thorough and those who authourised the raid should be sanctioned.

“There is a need to win the confidence of Nigerians in the security agencies, the Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo set a good precedent when he dismissed the former Director-General of DSS over a similar raid at National Assembly,” Arthur-Ugwa said.

He said that the intervention of Osinbajo restored the confidence of Nigerians and the International Community on Nigerian democracy and appealed for the confirmation of the Acting D-G, Mr Mathew Seiyefa as substantive DG.

He said the appointment of Seiyefa would motivate officials of the DSS to more dedication to duties as they would aspire to crown their careers.

“Seiyefa has shown that he is a round peg in a round hole and the Presidency should confirm his appointment before he retired and doing so would encourage officers in the DSS to give their best,” Arthur-Ugwa said.
