From: Diana Okon-Effiong, CalabarAdamu Ahmed Erena, President Nigeria Squash Federation, has called on interest sponsors to take advantage of lucrative tax rebates instituted by government to encourage sponsorship in sports across board

He said that by so doing the sponsors would be rewarded for taking pains to drive sports development in Nigeria. Erena in Calabar to inspect facilities ahead of the 2014 National Sports festival to be hosted by Cross River in November this year, stated this in an interview with our regional correspondent at the U.J. Esuene Stadium. The squash federation boss, who said that he took time off to watch the three day Cross River State/ All Nigeria Athletics Championship, explains that such tax rebate was encouraging.
Erena said: “For any sponsor of sports in Nigeria there is now an assurance of tax rebate right from the tax board. For anybody who sponsors squash now or any game there are tax rebates please take advantage of this law.
“I also want government to support this tax rebate and that the companies, corporate or individual sponsors should be sincere and comply by declaring their taxes sincerely.

“I am here in Calabar to see the extent of work done on squash facilities ahead of the National Sports Festival.
“You are also aware that squash is one of the sports slated for the festival to be hosted by Cross River State and we needed to know how far we have gone on facilities.
“From what I saw I think the state government had done a very good and commendable work. They are actually spending money and I am happy about the state of facilities here.
He said that since he came on board last May the federation had been able to organise 12 championships.
He said that with the right sponsorship the federation was capable of taking Nigeria to top 10 spot worldwide in squash, adding that the squash could fetch six medals at the National Sports Festival.
He said the federation had taken squash to the grassroots level through the introduction of Under-12 championships.
Erena said that the Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu as well as his Bauchi State counterpart had been keen sponsors of squash .
