The leadership of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, weekend, asserted that the planned national convention of the party tentatively scheduled for April 8 in Enugu would hold.
Interim National Chairman of APGA, Chief Maxi Okwu, who made the assertion during an unscheduled visit to the party’s secretariat in Abakaliki, stressed that it was high time the party made progress to avoid being relegated to the background in the political arena of the country.
He noted that the party was standing firm on the final declarations made by a competent court of jurisdiction, Enugu State High Court, in the resolution of the leadership crisis within APGA.
He stressed that until those declarations were set aside by a superior court, be it the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court, the declarations remained valid, no matter whose ox was gored.
Okwu added that stakeholders and members of the party had all been invited to attend the convention, which, according to him, will bring about the rebirth and repositioning of the party not only because of the 2015 general elections but also for the take-over of the South East by the APGA in future.
He said: “There are rules of engagements and the rules are clear to me not only as a politician but also as a lawyer. There is a final judgement of the competent court of jurisdiction, Enugu High Court, making certain declarations and until set aside by a superior court; be it Court of Appeal, be it Supreme Court those declaration stands.
“Going by the rules of practice, court hardly stays declarative judgments. So, we are quite conversant with the rules of engagements. APGA cannot hang; the case going on can hang APGA for the next four or five years. You recall that it took Chekwas eight years to surrender and return APGA certificate. APGA can hang on this issue and that will be the death of APGA and this we will not allow.”
