A programme that would recognise, honour and celebrate sports personalities, groups, organisations and government  who contribute to sports development in the Niger Delta was unveiled on Friday in Port Harcourt.

The programme, tagged Niger Delta Sports Awards, was unveiled by Thomas Adie, the Chairman of a 10-member Organising Committee for the award in an interactive session with journalists.

According to Adie, who led other members to the media briefing, the awards, organised by the Niger Delta Sports Association, is slated for Dec. 15 in Port Harcourt.

Adie said that his association was also targeting youths of the Niger Delta Region to be self-reliant and law-abiding through the awards which come in 18 categories.

“The Niger Delta Sport Awards will be conducted annually to recognise, honour, appreciate and celebrate outstanding performances by past and present local and international sportsmen and women.

“Organisations and individuals that have contributed immensely to the growth and development of sports in the Niger Delta region and beyond will also be celebrated.We intend to attract, motivate and encourage outstanding sportsmen and women to do even better and to inspire others to work harder to excel and contribute to the rapid development and growth of Niger Delta Sports.

“This, we hope will help the abundant talented sports future in the region and make it the hub and home of sports in Africa and the world at large,” Adie said.

He said that the group’s vision is to ensure that the Niger Delta region becomes the reference point and focus of Africa and global sports tourism in order to inspire other regions.

He said that the maiden edition of the award would celebrate the Sports Governors; Sports States; Sports Royal Fathers; Sports Legends; Sports Media; Sports Philanthropists; and Sports Legends of the Year, among others designed in 18 categories.
