Nigeria’s former finance and economy minister and candidate for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has stressed the need for the organisation to elect a credible candidate based on merit.
She spoke in Geneva on Wednesday while answering questions from newsmen at a press conference held shortly after her presentation to the WTO General Council and also emphasized the need for the position of the Director-General to be filled on time to help the world tackle the economic crisis occasioned by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic appropriately.
Okonjo-Iweala, who is among the eight candidates vying for the position, stated this while answering questions from newsmen at a press conference held shortly after her presentation to the WTO General Council. She added that electing a qualified woman on merit will signal the readiness of the women worldwide to assume positions of responsibility to help make the world better.
“Choosing a Director-General for WTO should be on merit. The best person should be chosen to lead an institution that’s having challenges.
“If it happens to be a woman, great. If it happens to be an African its also great. It should be based on merit,” she said while extolling the qualities which makes her well suited for the job.
