President Buhari with spokesman, Femi Adesina

Senate President, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan

In defiance of the resolution of the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday for the country’s military service chiefs to voluntary resign or be sacked due to the deteriorating security situation in the country, the Nigerian presidency has stated that only the president has the power  to hire and fire the service chiefs.

A terse statement by President Buhari’s Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina on Tuesday did not address the security concerns that prompted the resolution but claimed that the president has the interest of the country at heart while making appointments.

“The Senate Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the Service Chiefs to resign or be sacked due to the multi-pronged security challenges in the country.”
“The Presidency notes the resolution, and reiterates that appointment or sack of Service Chiefs is a Presidential prerogative, and President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, will do what is in the best interest of the country at all times”,  Adesina noted in the two-paragraph statement.
