Addressing some of the newly promoted officers at the command headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Controller of the command, Mr Alex Oditah, urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them.
Twenty officers were decorated with their new ranks ranging from Deputy Controller of Correction to Assistant Superintendent of Correction II.
According to Oditah, the command decided to select only 20 officers to decorate due to lack of space for the decoration of all the promoted officers.
“The newly promoted officers were among the successful candidates out of the many who participated in the recent promotional examinations conducted by the service nationwide.
“We are delighted that no fewer than 122 officers in the Rivers State command were promoted to different ranks.
“We are here today to decorate 20 officers at the command headquarters while the 102 other promoted officers will be decorated at their various stations in the state.
“The decision to decorate the officers is because we couldn’t accommodate all the 122 promoted officers at one event,” he said.
Oditah explained that an officer must be qualified and must have spent at least three to four years in a particular rank to participate in promotion interview.
According to him, the promotion of officers in the service also depends on the availability of vacancies.
“It does not necessarily mean that the officers that were not promoted were not competent, but for the reason of shortage of vacancies.
“So, I urge the newly promoted officers to remain hardworking and discharge their assigned duties to the best of their abilities,” he said.
He commended the Controller General of the service, Haliru Nababa, for graciously approving the promotion and decoration of officers under the command.
On his part, the Controller of Correction Medical, Dr Paul Nwakanma, told the elevated officers that promotion was a “privilege and not a right.”
He said the officers were found worthy of promotion due to their carrying out their assigned tasks and for being professional.
“So, the officers should see their promotion as a call to service as well as become more dedicated in their new position,” he said.
Mr Benson Luke, who was promoted to the rank of Deputy Controller of Corrections, thanked the service for the recognition and elevation of the officers.
According to him, the promotion will motivate the officers to offer their best in serving the country.
