Fire fighters in the Calabar Free Trade Zone (CFTZ) Monday quelled what management described as a major fire incident that could have engulfed the entire tank farm within the Zone

Eyewitnesses say that the 14-tyre tanker, laden with petrol, fell at about 2.34 pm as it negotiated a sharp corner at top speed after loading from one of the tank farms owned by North West Petroleum.

They also told our correspondent that the fallen articulated tanker spilled content which caught fire that consumed the vehicle and a nearby office block within the vicinity of more than 52 companies within the CFTZ.

According to the eyewitnesses two persons are feared death and property worth millions of Naira destroyed by the fire.

They said that the driver, conductor and another passenger, who escorted the truck, were involved and that the driver and his conductor were dead.

However, Mr Richard Bassey, the Public Relations Officer for CFTZ, told journalists who visited the scene that the situation could have been more devastating if it was not put under control by the CFTZ’s fire fighters.

He said the EPZ’s fire fighters, who were alert rushed to the scene near North West Petroleum where the tanker had fallen, quelled the fire in line with what he called international best Practices.

Bassey, who confirmed the incident saying that there was no harm to lives, however declined further comment on the matter.
He said that normal investigation would begin before further comments are made on the Monday’s fire incident at CFTZ.
