From: Magnus Aluma,  Abakaliki.
Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has urged the Federal Government and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to go into negotiation, with a view to coming out with measures that would end the prolonged industrial action of the Union.
Umahi stated this when he received in audience, the Director General Budget Office of the Federation and Member Board of Trustees of Nigerian Police Trust Fund, Mr Ben Akabueze who paid him a courtesy call at the Government House, Abakaliki.
In his words, “our basic problem in this country remains security, health and education. Let me say a little in education which is in our public domain and which the ASUU strike is and I think that our education system is not being properly educated”.
The governor however, noted that university education is not compulsory, adding that the basic education every country strives to attain is the secondary and vocational schools.
Governor Umahi stressed the need to review Nigeria’s educational system and ensure dialogue between the Federal Government and ASUU, with the view to finding a solution to the lingering strike.
According to him, “there is a need to review our educational system, it mustn’t be for everybody. I am not ashamed that I have first degree and my Deputy is a PhD holder, it doesn’t matter. So, I cannot see how we cannot sit down with ASUU leaders and iron out this problem about the strike”.

He further said the Federal Government can not borrow 1.1trillion naira to meet the demands of ASUU, even though the demands were germane, contending that the reconciliation has to take a gradual process.
There  must be commitment on the side of both parties that look, this ASUU are not asking this to take to their houses so to say, there are asking it for our children to better the infrastructure, to better the lecturers and the students, but we can start with a fraction of that and then have a programme that will run on the platform of sincerity to address all the lots”, he added.
Umahi therefore, urged ASUU leadership and those on the side of government to show understanding and begin to meet each other halfway, for the schools to open, to save the fate of children in the schools.
