(AP) — A union official in the tiny West African nation of Togo says one student is dead and another wounded at a demonstration seeking better working conditions for teachers.

Ephrem Tsikplonou, secretary-general of a Togolese trade union called CSTT, said a student was fatally shot by security forces in the town of Dapaong on Monday.

Togo’s security minister Yark Damehane said security forces had fired bullets into the air in an effort to get the crowd under control.

Last week, thousands of students marched in Lome’s streets to demand better conditions for their teachers, who have been on strike for a week.

The Togolese government closed all public and private primary and secondary schools in the capital following the protests.

The government statement did not say when schools would be reopened.
