A Washington DC-area healthcare provider, Angela Iheoma has invented a portable device, the WomanHomeExamBed to make pelvic examinations widely available to women all over the world. The device enables early detection and treatment of Cervical Cancer.  Early diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer at stage 0 equates to 93% survival rate.

A healthcare provider, Angela Iheoma has invented a portable device, the WomanHomeExamBed to make pelvic examinations widely available to women all over the world. The device enables early detection and treatment of Cervical Cancer.  Early diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer at stage 0 equates to 93% survival rate.

Iheoma, a nurse practitioner with 18 years’ experience shares the story behind the invention below:

“I have been practicing in housecalls programs whereby healthcare is brought into the individual or client’s home since 2006. Time and time again I have had to turn down my female patients’ requests for a pelvic examination, either because they were having symptoms and needed to be checked or plain old ” I have not have had a pelvic examination for years”.  A few of my patients stated they have not had a pelvic examination in 30 years. These were generally female clients that are still in relationships or marriages”.

“There was a need to incorporate this service in a her practice so she set about inventing a portable device that can be used on a soft surface such as a bed and perform pelvic examinations on female patients in a housecall practice. This portable device will not only save women’s lives from cervical cancer but also reduce in the disparity in mortality from cervical cancer in minority women all over the world.  Most of this occurs from obstacles to receiving healthcare services related to cancer prevention, early detection, with poverty as an overriding factor.  By bringing pelvic examinations to women right in their home, this portable device will eliminate lack of access to healthcare, cultural barriers stemming from lack of education and increase survival rates as well as prevention.”

“Women will not have to wait for weeks for an appointment to go get a pelvic examination and are then more likely to be compliant with recommended periodic and episodic examinations as well as making the examination more homely and comfortable for the female patient.

MyHomeGyneExamBed can make this a reality by making pelvic exams possible in the home and increasing females’ access to providers who can perform this exam at home. More women are then likely to comply with preventative examinations, resulting in early detection & treatment of precancerous and cancerous cervical cells.”

“Supporters are needed to make it possible for this device to become a reality and available to every female patient and provider. Women are having to manage a professional life in addition to being the primary care giver in their households. Often times, getting regular pelvic exams falls in their priority even when they are experiencing symptoms or are overdue for recommended routine preventative  visits with their doctors. It can also allow the saving of women’s lives across the globe and in remote rural areas.”

“Making pelvic examinations easily accessible in patients’ homes will also promote quicker treatment of STDs, reducing the long term effects when left untreated, including infertility.

Myhomegyneexambed can also lead the pathway in adding telemedicine to women’s healthcare, thereby augmenting women’s access to healthcare wherever they are in the US and the world. Imagine how eventually a woman can perform her own exam and wirelessly send a picture of her cervix to be examined remotely. Not too far off eventually as our lives get busier. Your Support and Contributions are highly needed to make this happen for women in the US and the world.”
