AMAA 2013 065Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson has stressed the need for the movie industry in the country to focus more on projecting the positive values and rich cultural heritage of the people to the outside world.
AMAA 2013 071Governor Dickson made the remark at a cultural event, which featured Wrestling, traditional dances and Boat Regatta as part of activities marking the 9th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital.
In furtherance of the restoration agenda, he said government on its part, would organize a cultural event before the end of this year, to showcase the culture and traditions of the Ijaw people as well as the tourism potentials that abound in Bayelsa.
Governor Dickson noted that the creation of a separate Ministry for Culture and Ijaw National Affairs was to advance the cause of the Ijaws and promote unity among the people.
In his welcome address the Commissioner for Culture and Ijaw National Affairs, Dr. Felix Tuodolo, said wrestling and boat regatta are two age-long traditions that have had significant bearing on the lifestyle of the Ijaws because of the peculiar nature of the terrain.
According to the commissioner, wrestling is one of the dominant sports in Bayelsa that has consistently brought the innate talents of the people, especially the youths and made the State to dominate the sport.
Dr. Tuodolo noted that AMAA would help highlight the tourism potentials in the state and harness indigenous budding talents in the entertainment industry.
The 8 local government areas of the State participated in the cultural event, which attracted dignitaries from all works of life. Governor Governor Dickson later performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a Film City at Igbogene, in Yenagoa, in fulfillment on an earlier pledge for the construction of the project.
The proposed multifaceted Film City project, according to the Architect in charge of the project, Mr. Edogu Victor, is expected to accommodate facilities such as business district, relaxation centre, helipad, collapsible sets, Police and Fire Service stations, Inauguration Centre, night club, film village setting among others.
